Freedom of Panorama "intervention" (Summer 2015); postal mailings to German Members of Parliament, advocating for a EU-wide pro-Freedom of Panorama position.
Attention
We sent a letter that included two almost identical postcards. Both postcards showed a famous sight from the city or home state of the respective Member of Parliament. One looked like a traditional postcard from a tourist place, saying "greetings from ... with freedom of panorama!". The other looked similar, but had the famous sight blacked out. Here the line read "greetings from ... 'without freedom of panorama!". Also, the letter included an actual call to action from our Executive Director. It explained that EU legislation could keep people from sharing pictures of the home region of the Member of Parliament, and that with their "pro vote" they could keep Freedom of Panorama in Germany.
Because
Our reasoning was, ..."because of Wikipedia and sharing freely". Infringed Freedom of Panorama would lead to problems for Wikipedia. But we added another "because" by appealing to the personal regional background, as in "because it does have a negative effect on your local community".
chorus/content
  • Wikipedia and volunteers need Freedom of Panorama
  • your vote on EU legislation will affect your region
  • you can make a difference
  • Wikipedia and volunteers need Freedom of Panorama
do
Vote against the specific paragraph that would infringe Freedom of Panorama

Program
Wiki Loves Women

Target audience: General public

Attention
Less than 20% of (all) Wikipedia contributors are female. Only 16% of the biographies on the English Wikipedia are about women. Only 25% of edits to subjects about the Sub-Saharan region come from within that region. More edits originate from Hong Kong each quarter than do from the entire continent of Africa over the same period. Wiki Loves Women wants to change this by celebrating the women of Africa on Wikipedia in four countries.
Because
  • There is a lack of information about Africa and women on Wikipedia
  • There are very few editors on Wikipedia who are from Africa and are women
  • There is a lot of information that exists within organisations that people cannot always access.
Chorus/content
  • Editing Wikipedia is not only important but is fun
  • Reflecting more content on Wikipedia about notable women balances the kinds of information that is being consumed
  • Providing information on Wikipedia about the context that women face in Africa provides profound understanding of problems and issues that people face daily.
Do
  • You can get involved. Join a training session and add content to Wikipedia by contacting your local Wiki Loves Women Wikipedian in Residence.
