I have been Wikimedian since 2008, and since 2012 I am the most active participant in the first GLAM collaboration between the Bulgarian Wikimedian community and the Bulgarian Archives State Agency. Me and my colleagues who contribute to the collaboration have digitized more than 5300 photographs and documents, which have been mostly used by now locally in the Bulgarian Wikipedia.
In November, an idea occurred to me of how to make the results from this GLAM cooperation more visible, tangible and better utilized across the different languages of Wikipedia. The idea, called "the "Archives Challenge", expanded to an international contest, thanks to the support provided by my Bulgarian colleague Nikola Kalchev and other people among the Wikimedians from Central and Eastern Europe.
I would like to share more insights about how the challenge was planned and organized, and internationalized, how it was made more visible and popular among the community. I also would like to give more information about how this challenge catalyzed our user group for ambitious plans for the Year 2016, about how to deepen the collaboration with the Archives with a project, for which we plan to apply for funding from the Wikimedia Foundation (in late February or early March). There are good chances at Wikimania to be able to provide even more detailed information about the project and its development.
