Abstract

Natural leaders are ready to emerge in every human group. Whether or not they do so depends on the existing leadership situation: whether it is effective, lacking, non-existent, or renegade.

It also depends, to some degree, on how much the group or community implicitly as well as explicitly values, permits, and encourages the emergence of new leaders.

We propose to review some scenarios, successful and unsuccessful, of emergent leadership, based on our observations of actual Wikimedia leaders in various groups, communities, committees, and boards (but appropriately transformed into the anonymous and prototypical), and to discuss some specific ways in which the Wikimedia movement could do more to benefit from the potential of emergent leadership.
