Sillustani jest przedinkaskim miejscem pochówków, na którym stawiano nagrobki w kształcie wież (tzw. chullpas), w których umieszczano szczątki zmarłych szlachetnie urodzonych. Cmentarzysko zostało założone przez Ajmarów, którzy zostali podbici przez Inków w XV wieku.
